Blog #6: Coding

Please write a brief definition of coding.  Describe the process you have been or will use for coding the data collected during your practicum.  What are some of the challenges and rewards you have encountered or anticipate encountering while coding your data?

  1. Coding is the process of sorting and organizing your data. During my data collection I used a color coordinating method. Each of my categories had a color associated with it. As I analyzed my data I would use the assigned color when I came across any useful information pertaining to my topics. I also used this coding method when I was gathering and reviewing information for my literature review. This method was very helpful for me when I was going through and organizing my data. When I began writing my literature review I was able to pull the articles pertaining to the particular area I was focusing on which helped save me time. I experienced some trouble when the articles or data didn't use the exact verbiage that I was using in my study. I think it would have been beneficial if under each topic I had words or phrases that would have been acceptable to use.

  2. Coding data means you sort data into categories. Some categories will have sub categories as well. I used color codes for my data. I have four categories: intelligence, talent, growth mindset, and mistakes. It was hard in some cases to decide where to code some items because they may have been applicable to multiple categories. The idea of coding is one that was a little confusing to me at the beginning, so I spent a good deal of time trying to make sense of how to code. When I looked at articles for my literature review, it was much easier to color code items within the article. There were multiple colors in the articles, but it was very easy to keep track of where everything belonged because I only had four codes. I developed a good rhythm in deciding what was relevant from the data as compared with the articles, and that was the most satisfying part of the coding process.

  3. Coding is the process of assigning a code to something for the purposes of classification or identification. I used a color coding system to code my data. I used a three color system to identify the words the students sounded out, knew on command, and did not know at all. I used that and tallied them all up. I also used a color coded system on the short vowel words of a,e,i,o,u. Coding was a little confusing to me at first because I didn't know how to go about it but once I started coding it became easier for me to organize my data in a way that I can understand. I think the biggest challenge was figuring out what exactly I wanted to code. As the process went on it made it easier to make my data charts.

  4. Coding is a process of sorting and organizing your data into categories. I was really overwhelmed by the concept of coding when I first began my research. Once I began to investigate my topic further, coding became easier. I used a color coding system once I began noticing themes. I also wrote down themes that were reoccuring and sub-themes within.

  5. Coding is the process of sorting and organizing data to use in qualitative research. Coding allows a researcher to keep track of information involved in the study. I used coding to keep track of when the students spoke without recognition by the teacher. From the initial coding I derived the sub-coding during the second half of my data taking when the students used the visual tool. Coding was not too difficult, using multicolor system to keep track of the different categories. Analyzing the coded data and figuring out the best data to use was a bit more challenging. The coded data did, however let me see which students in my class that spoke out the most and I could use that data to establish some strategies to use to help them to follow the class rule of staying quiet until recognized to speak.

  6. Coding is the process of sorting or categorizing data through the use of words, numbers, letters, colors, or other to assist with classification or identification. I used coding throughout my thesis to help me keep things organized. In order to do this, I used different color highlighters. First, for my data spreadsheets, I highlighted the information I would be using for my project (just the grades of the special education students). I then used different color highlighters to mark each letter grade. Each letter grade was highlighted with a different color (example: B - blue) to make counting how many students received each letter grade easier. Last, I used highlighting to categorize themes and sub themes while reading articles for my literature review. Each theme or subtheme was assigned its own color. This made it easy to go back and reference information needed for each section of my literature review. I think the most important thing to remember when coding is to keep a key. On a separate sheet of paper I had the color and what theme that color related to. This made it easier to reference when going through all the articles and deciding what information fit where. I think without a key, coding could get messy and disorganized easily.
